MaDAM
Overview
The 'MaDAM Pilot data management infrastructure for biomedical researchers at University of Manchester' project was funded under the Infrastructure strand of the JISC Managing Research Data Programme between October 2009 and June 2010, with an additional University of Manchester contribution in equipment budget and staff support.
MaDAM aimed at producing a technical & governance solution based on researchers’ requirements with flexibility to meet needs across multiple research groups/disciplines and taking into account the institutional landscape and its policies. This encompassed data capture, data storage and data curation, and was designed to add value both to the full lifecycle of research projects and also by making data readily available for reuse.
The pilot focused on a specific domain area (Life and Medical Sciences) as input to a wider strategic activity to address the needs of the whole of the University research community. User engagement in the MaDAM project focused on an iterative user-driven/bottom-up development process together with collecting non-technical requirements.
The project had the following objectives:
- Develop a day-to-day pilot data management infrastructure along researchers' data lifecycle & actual work practice
- Engage and work closely with the pilot user groups to ensure the infrastructure is fit for purpose
- Investigate how research data management services and infrastructure may be embedded within research practices and institutional settings
- Develop a data management plan and investigate activities to ensure the sustainability of service provision, including a cost-benefit analysis
End of Project - MaDAM Continuation & Service Transition
The software we have produced will be maintained, at least for the time being, by the Manchester eScholar Support Team in John Rylands University Library. The other project outputs can be found on this webpage.
The JISC funded successor project MiSS (MaDAM [Manchester Data Management] into Sustainable Service) will be building on the MaDAM pilot and findings between October 2011 and March 2013.
We would like to thank..
..especially our pilot users for their time despite tight schedules and their invaluable and ongoing contributions regarding their work practice, requirements and evaluation activities. They have been the major factor in shaping the MaDAM service. We wish also to thank the JISC for funding the MaDAM project.
